As I showed earlier today in my Flickr-stream, I’m a big fan of Fluid. I’m also a big fan of Instapaper. After seeing Jon Hicks’ Helvetireader, I wanted to experiment a bit with the possibilities of Fluid.

So I made a Userscript that applies an entirely new layout to Instapaper, styled especially for Fluid’s MenuExtra feature. Love it or hate it, it was a fun experience.

The end result:

Instapaper Fluid

Howto

  • Download and launch Fluid.
  • Enter following details:
    • URL
      http://www.instapaper.com/
    • Name
      Instapaper
    • Location
      Applications
    • Icon
      Download
  • Press “Create” and then “Launch Now”
  • Copy following URL and paste it in a new tab in the address bar:
    http://www.maxvoltar.com/files/instapaperfluid/instapaperfluid.user.js
  • You should get a popup. Press “Install”
  • Close the tab you just opened, and refresh your main tab. Already looking good, huh?!
  • Go to Settings > Advanced, and set the app to only allow pages matching this pattern: *instapaper.com/u*
  • In your menubar, click on “Instapaper” and select “Convert to MenuExtra SSB…”
  • The app will relaunch itself.
  • Done.

Files

If you want you can take a look at the original files. All credits for the Userscript go to Jon Hicks, from who I blatantly copied his original one and only changed some URL’s.

Even more…

I uploaded another userscript that’ll refresh the page every 30 minutes (so you don’t have to).

Copy and install:
http://www.maxvoltar.com/files/instapaperfluid/autorefresh.user.js

It’s based on this userscript. I only changed the amount of time.

(I also used this for the Mint Leaves app)

Update (October 7th)

I’ve changed the default styling a bit in case the Instapaper peeps would add features. Also did some fine-tuning. No need to reinstall, just refresh and you have the latest styling.

I love it. I think I’ll have to look into Fluid’s capabilities soon!

{HIG whore}However, shouldn’t top bar icons be saturated?{/HIG whore}

Yes it should be :-)
Maybe I’ll make a second icon later today. Now: work…

Wunderbar Mac only, gotta boot up the ol’ h$ckintosh…

Amazing! I have one complaint: you can’t see the comment text (well, you can, but it’s behind the title and URL and hard to read). otherwise, it’s a great userstyle.

Hey Willie, I’ve never used comments, and that’s the reason I didn’t style them. Will try finding a solution when I have a spare hour!
